Why the total range is narrow: guesses for different deeds are unlikely to all be too high or all too low, so they partly cancel out.
People helped, deed by deed
How we calculate this
We start with everyone a deed reached, then keep only the people it really helped. Each step makes the number smaller and more honest:
- × chance it works. A long shot only counts in part.
- × how much better off. Not everyone reached is helped, and a few may be worse off.
- − would have happened anyway. Some people would have found help elsewhere.
- × your share. Credit is shared with others who made it happen.
- − overlap with others. People already counted in another deed are not counted twice.
Every number comes with a likely range. Strong evidence gives a narrow range, a rough guess a wide one.
The words experts use
Fractions of people. The math can give "2.7 people". That means, on average, about 3 people fully helped, or more people helped a little. We round it on the main screens.
Deadweight (counterfactual): people who would have been fine without you. That's the "would have happened anyway" step.
Expected value: a long shot's chance times its size. 2% of 1,000 people counts as 20.
Help-years: what we call "years of better life".
